Speech

I have been dreading speech class ever since I found out in high school that all pre-pharmacy students must take it. I run the other way when asked to speak in front of people. It just isn't "my thing." (It probably explains why I like "hiding" behind a blog). Well, I enrolled in a speech class my first semester at college (fall 2008) so that I could quit dreading it. But, I quickly decided to drop it....okay, I dropped it after the first class meeting. I decided to put speech off until summer 2010 thinking that, after almost two years at this college, I would feel more confident and be more prepared to take speech.

So, I worked on conquering English 101 and 102, Calculus I, General Chemistry 151 and 152, Organic Chemistry 201 and 202, etc. You would think that, after all of that, a measly speech class would be nothing...bahahahaha....that assumption on my part was so wrong! Summer 2010 sneaked up, and that confidence I was hoping for was nowhere to be found. But, I managed to pull enough nerve together and enrolled myself in speech class, once again, for this summer.

The days before summer semester began ticked down...too quickly. June 14th came...too quickly. June 14th was the awful day that speech began. I was nervous; there was not an ounce of confidence anywhere near me. But, I went to class that day. I even went the next day (considering my track record, that was an amazing feat to pull off!) and the next. The deadline for speech #1 reared its ugly head two weeks into the course. The day of the speech I mechanically walked up to the podium...thinking all the while "WHAT AM I DOING!?!?" But, you know what, it was over in about seven minutes. Something I had been dreading for years was over in a matter of minutes. I survived! And, I have survived through two more speeches. (All with A's :) ).

Now I can't believe I spent years dreading something that was over in seven minutes...seven minutes just doesn't seem worth all that dread now :).

That is great! Good job! I took a public speaking DSST exam in place of the class, and talking into that tape recorder was probably the most nerve wracking few minutes of my entire college experience. But you are right... it was over so quickly! :)
